MIM celebrates 50 years in House, hosts luncheon in Assembly

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen celebrated 50 years of its presence in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday. Speaker Nadendla Manohar, Chief Minis-ter N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, Leader of the Opposition N. Chandrababu Naidu and leaders of various political parties greeted MIM Floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi on the occasion. Late Sultan Salahu-ddin Owaisi, who headed the AIMIM for long, was elected to the Assembly on February 19, 1962 from 216-Pathergatti costituency in Hyderabad.

In his maiden election, the senior Owaisi trounced his Congress rival Masooma Begum, who was a minister in the Neelam Sanjiva Reddy Cabinet, by a margin of 5,141 votes. At 26 years of age, Mr Owaisi, who later was referred to as Salar-e-Millat, was one of the youngest members of the Assembly in 1962.

"From just one member in this august House five decades ago, today, we have seven members, apart from two members in the Legislative Cou-ncil," Mr Akbaruddin Owaisi said. On the occasion of Golden jubilee celebrations in the Assembly, the AIMIM hosted lunch to for all the legislators in the Assembly premises. Besides the leaders of all the political parties, legislature secretary Raja Sadaram and legislature officials attended the luncheon and congratulated Mr Owaisi.
